I will rather say who should or who are more likely to become an excellent sales writer. Its straight and simple, some one who understands his prospects the best. It can be any employee of your company, basically the marketing team. The key is to live with your prospects, walk with them, understand their egos and understand their real world. This is when you truly understand their lives, their motivational points, their problems, their emotional hook points and all the pleasure and pain points which induces buying in them

 

Any sales writer or for that matter any marketing guru fails in understanding this simple truth will have a hard time selling his product or service. So the formeost point is to get this thing right. Then and only then think about writing or marketing your stuff. Brands which understood this always succedded others no matter how big they were failed miserably.

 

Anyone can become a sales writer”, I just do not go with this popular theory. Of course someone with an inborn talent or inclination to write can become a good sales writer. If you go through my previous article on “How to write killer sales copy” you can deduce a basic idea on how to get started. The rest comes from understanding your prospects better and from writing and rewriting a lot of copy.

 

Right now do this exercise, take any written ad content of your product or service and try to rewrite it with all those principles in mind, rewrite the copy until you feel lifted looking at your work. Write as much as you can and you will slowly notice a clear difference in the way you write your copy.

 

Another thing that most copywriters do is get their work critiqued by their colleagues or friends who understand sales. Just take in the common feedbacks that you receive then judge them based on 2 points, first, will the change make my copy more effective and second, will the change bring in a whole new point that talks more about the benefit my customer will experience. If the feedback qualifies in these aspects then do not thing twice in making those changes else simply discard the feedback. This is my favourite. Most copy writers spend days, weeks or even months together to come up with a million dollar headline. A headline which no matter, irrespective of the situation will grab the attention of your prospects even in the biggest of ad crowds

 

Follow these simple rules while writing arresting headlines

 

#1. It should talk about a precise benefit for your prospect

 

For eg. You are selling a weight loss program and your headline looks like this:

 

“Clinically approved weight loss program”

 

This heading looks good and simple but may be doesn't amplify the benefit your prospect is goin to experience. Lets change it a bit

 

“Now loose those extra pounds around your waist and become healthier”

 

This headline is clearly showing a benefit of becoming healthier and also talks about looking trim. This is definitely more appealing than the first one.

 

 

#2 Be precise

 

Look at this headline for the same weight loss program

 

“Now loose those extra pounds around your waist with our weight loss program”

 

Let's make it more precise

 

“Loose 30 pounds in just 3 weeks flat with our weight loss program”

 

This sounds precise, credible and confident. Hope you get what I mean.

 

 

#3. Develop curiosity

How to write killer sales copy Print E-mail

We need and only need ads, brochures or sales letters/emails that win customers. #1. Start with an arresting Headline

#3. Speak their language

 

Your copy should speak their language, through out the copy they should feel as if someone very personal to them, someone who knows them is speaking to them about a benefit. If your copy is capable of doing this more likely your prospect will end up buying your product. If anytime during the copy if he feels as if this is a sales pitch which will ultimately trap him to buy then.. you know they will never think twice to throw it away. No one wants to be traped into buying, even if we present the product with the truest of intentions.

 

#4. Talk through the benefits your prospect is going to get

 

Your copy should talk less about your product and more or may be fully about the benefits the prospect would get if he buys your product. Make him experience the real benefits your product will bring to his life.

 

For eg. If you are selling a foot massager, instead of saying “here comes a foot massager which is clinically approved”, say, “now get relived from your foot pain and enjoy your evenings playing with your kids”. I reckon you got the point.

 

#5. Expect and answer your prospect's problems or questions

 

Your copy should not leave any question or problems of your prospect unanswered. So anticipate the problems and questions and then answer each and every one of them in your copy and present your product or service as the best solution. If you leave any question unanswered they may read it but may not even bother buying.

 

#8 Use short paragraphs and bulleted points

 

This makes the reading more interesting and easy for your prospect's eyes. Long uninteresting paragraphs are boring and seldom attract the readers interest.

 

#4. Make your sales presentation look credible.

 

Most ads give tall claims about their products and its benefits but are rarely credible or even sound credible. The best way to add credibility to your copy is by adding couple of real testimonials. If they are someone who are quite popular among your prospective customers the better it will be.

 

#5.Give a metal proof guarantee to your product.

 

Always stand beside your product or service with a guarantee or even a money back guarantee, this will make your product or service more credible and immediately show your prospects the faith you have in your product. This will also take away the risk that your prospect will be having about purchasing or giving your product a try.
